Walter G. Estes, 80, of Cheshire

  Walter G. Estes, 80, of 79 Richardson St., Cheshire, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at home.

Born May 14, 1919 in Savoy, he was the son of Gordon and E. Blanche (McCulloch) Estes. He was educated in Savoy schools and was a graduate of Lee High School.

He had resided in Cheshire since 1948 and prior to that had resided in Adams. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was employed as an agent for the John Hancock Insurance Co. for 35 years retiring in 1979. After his retirement, he served as the town accountant for the Town of Cheshire, a post which he had held up until his death.

 


He was a member of the Cheshire Baptist Church, having served as a deacon for several years. He also had held several other positions at the church. He had been a member of the Cheshire Fire Department for more than 50 years, serving most of that time as the first assistant chief.

He started the Cheshire Little League and also had served as the vice president of the Adams Ambulance Board of Directors. He was an avid golfer and had played semi-pro baseball at one time.

His wife, the former Catherine Donovan, whom he married Aug. 30, 1940, died Nov. 19, 1979.

He leaves two daughters, Lynn M. Bialas of Ladson, S.C., and Gail P. Rosier of Cheshire; a brother, Lanford Estes, and a sister, Jean Moreland, both of Ramsey, Ill.; his longtime companion, Dorothy LeFebvre of Cheshire; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Two brothers are deceased. Richard A. Estes died in 1939 and Paul V. Estes died in 1997.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Jan. 13, 11 a.m., at the Cheshire Baptist Church with the Rev. William Furey and the Rev. Chandler Holmes officiating. Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours at the Dery-Cheshire Funeral Home are Wednesday, 2-4 and 6-9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cheshire Fire Department or to the Adams Ambulance Fund through the funeral home, North State Road, Cheshire, Mass. 01225.

Funeral services for Estes held Thursday

CHESHIRE -- Funeral services for Walter G. Estes of Cheshire were held Thursday, Jan. 13, at the Cheshire Baptist Church with the Rev. William Furey, the Rev. Chandler Holmes and the Rev. Frank Knight, officiating.

Burial followed in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams. Pallbearers were George Sweet, Gus Martin, Richie Fransisconi, Dan LaPlante, Niel Baker and Fran Gwozdz. The flag was presented to Mr. Estes' granddaughter, April Rose, by Les Rhinemiller and Bill Reedy of the Cheshire Fire Department.

Mr. Estes died Jan. 9.
